Maltese feature film Żejtune has added another international award to its growing list of achievements after winning the Audience Award at the 19th Mediterranean Film Festival Split in Croatia.

The film, written and directed by Alex Camilleri, was presented to audiences in Split, with the award announced during the festival’s closing ceremony on Saturday 20th June.

The win marks the film’s second international award in just over a week. It follows Camilleri’s Best Screenplay award in the International Narrative Feature category at the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Żejtune tells the story of Mar, played by Michela Farrugia, a young woman whose plans to leave Malta are challenged after meeting Nenu, an ageing għana singer played by debut actor Nenu Borg.

The film blends themes of music, memory, identity, and Maltese tradition, helping it connect with audiences both locally and abroad.

Camilleri attended the festival in Croatia and thanked audiences for the warm reception, while also recognising the work of the cast, crew, producers, and funders who helped bring the film to life.

With recognition now coming from both New York and Croatia, Żejtune continues to build momentum as one of the standout Maltese film projects of the year.

Another proud moment for Maltese cinema on the international stage.
