Canada is now eligible to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest after CBC/Radio-Canada became a full member of the European Broadcasting Union.
The EBU confirmed that CBC/Radio-Canada has joined as a full member, giving the broadcaster access to the wider range of EBU collaboration, including Eurovision-related exchange services.
Eurovision’s official rules state that eligibility to participate is subject to compliance with EBU membership requirements and the rules of the contest.
That means Canada now has a clearer path to potentially entering the contest in future.
However, eligibility does not automatically mean participation. Canada has not yet officially confirmed that it will compete in the next edition of Eurovision.
Billboard Canada also reported that CBC/Radio-Canada’s full EBU membership makes Canada officially eligible for Eurovision, while noting that the broadcaster has not confirmed whether it will take part.
If Canada does eventually enter, it would not be the first country outside Europe to compete. Australia has taken part in Eurovision before, showing that the contest is not limited strictly to European geography.
For now, Eurovision fans will have to wait and see whether Canada turns eligibility into an actual debut.
