A Malta-connected independent film has made its mark in Los Angeles.
Illusion of Faith, produced and directed by Malta-based filmmaker Aleksa Ristovic, has won Best International Feature Film at the Hard Faith Film Festival in Southern California.
The festival brought together filmmakers, premieres and audiences for four days of faith-based cinema, with productions from the United States and beyond.
For Ristovic, Illusion of Faith marks an important step in his filmmaking journey. The project is his feature-film directorial debut, following a number of international recognitions for his short films. Public listings also describe Illusion of Faith as Ristovic’s 2026 debut feature and show that it received Hard Faith Fest Los Angeles nominations ahead of its premiere.
The film is closely connected to Malta, featuring Maltese and international cast and crew members. It also places Malta’s landscapes, locations and heritage on screen, something which reportedly stood out strongly to audiences attending the Los Angeles screening.
According to the information received, the film was screened to a full cinema audience and received a warm reaction for its emotional storytelling, performances and visual portrayal of Malta.
The story follows a man facing a life-changing diagnosis, while searching for answers, meaning and purpose. Viewers were said to have responded strongly to the film’s emotional ending and spiritual message.
Lead actor Henry Zammit Cordina also received particular praise for his performance in the film’s central role, with audiences highlighting the emotional honesty and depth he brought to the character.
After receiving the award, Ristovic thanked those who supported the production and helped bring the project to life.
“This award belongs to the entire cast, crew, supporters, and everyone who believed in the film,” Ristovic said. “I am grateful for this recognition and motivated to come back even stronger with my next project.”
Following its world premiere and international recognition, Illusion of Faith is now seeking worldwide distribution as the team looks to bring the film to wider audiences.
For Malta’s independent film community, this is another encouraging sign that locally connected stories can travel far beyond our shores.
