The Charles&Ron story is coming to television
The journey of one of Malta’s best-known fashion partnerships is set to inspire a new local drama series.
Titled Il-Ħajjata, the production will consist of 10 episodes exploring the story of Charles and Ron Van Maarschalkerweerd Borg and their rise from Malta’s fashion scene to international recognition.
It is being produced by Watermelon Media for the Maltese-content platform GO TOKIS.
Inspired by real events
Il-Ħajjata is being presented as a drama inspired by the designers’ experiences rather than a conventional television documentary.
The series is expected to follow the ambition, personal relationship and creative work behind the Charles&Ron name, although detailed storylines have not yet been disclosed.
Production activity has included preparations to recreate moments from the designers’ earlier career, including a call connected to the filming of a 2004 fashion show.
A partnership lasting more than 30 years
Charles and Ron met in 1992 and have now been partners for more than three decades.
Together, they developed Charles&Ron into a leading Maltese fashion label while continuing to use Malta as their creative and business base.
Their designs frequently include local imagery, colours and architectural details, from traditional balconies and limestone to Maltese flora, marine life and historical symbols.
This strong connection to local identity has helped make their work immediately recognisable both in Malta and abroad.
Malta on the international fashion stage
Over the years, Charles&Ron have presented collections internationally and seen their designs worn by performers and public figures outside Malta.
The designers have also represented the country at events including the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange, with one of their dresses later entering Heritage Malta’s national collection.
Their official brand story describes Malta as the continuing home of Charles&Ron despite the label’s international reach.
When will Il-Ħajjata be released?
A release date and full cast were not included in the initial announcement reviewed at the time of publication.
GO TOKIS offers Maltese films, dramas, comedies and entertainment programmes both live and on demand.
More details about Il-Ħajjata are expected as production progresses, but the central idea is already clear: a distinctly Maltese fashion story is being turned into a full television drama.
