Maltese author Chris Azzopardi has received national recognition for creating what The Malta Records describes as the longest continuous series of novels written in Maltese.
The record was awarded for Il-Kalendarju, a collection made up of 12 novels whose stories continue from one book to the next.
The achievement marks an important moment for Azzopardi, while also shining a light on Maltese-language publishing and the readers who continue to support books written in their native language.
Twelve Connected Novels
Unlike a collection of separate stories, the 12 books forming Il-Kalendarju are connected, with the narrative continuing throughout the series.
According to The Malta Records, this makes it the longest series of interconnected Maltese-language novels published in the Maltese Islands.
Wise Owl Publications was responsible for publishing every book in the series and was thanked for its continued support of Azzopardi’s work.
Recognition for His Writing
Azzopardi’s work has also received recognition through a literary competition organised by the Żejtun Local Council.
An extract from the fifth book in the Il-Kalendarju series was awarded first place in the competition.
The achievement adds to the author’s contribution to local literature, which also includes books aimed at younger readers.
The National Literacy Agency previously sponsored five of Azzopardi’s children’s books and distributed them in schools, helping his work reach young readers across Malta and Gozo.
Supporting Maltese Authors and Readers
In announcing the record, thanks were also extended to the National Book Council and Malta Libraries for their work in making books by Maltese authors available in public libraries.
Educators and broadcasters were also recognised for offering support, coverage and opportunities to discuss local literature.
The Ogygia Folk Group was thanked for providing Azzopardi with regular opportunities to remain connected with Maltese traditions and culture.
Most importantly, the announcement acknowledged the readers who choose to read in Maltese. Their support remains essential for authors, publishers and organisations working to keep Maltese literature active and accessible.
