Mqabba’s Tower Of Light Returns On Santa Marija Eve
Mqabba’s Fireworks Spectacular will return on Friday, 14 August 2026, with organisers planning a 63-metre Tower of Light as the centrepiece of a four-part display on the eve of the Feast of Santa Marija.
The show is scheduled to begin at 9:30pm along Triq il-Konvoj ta’ Santa Marija, on the Mqabba bypass. The organisers say approximately 10,000 fireworks shots will feature across the programme.
The following day, 15 August, Mqabba celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. The feast is also included in VisitMalta’s August 2026 events calendar.
New 3D Effects Planned For The Tower
According to the organisers, this year’s Tower of Light will rise to 63 metres and use an entirely new concept incorporating three-dimensional aerial effects.
One planned sequence is described as creating a 3D heart. The effects will be fired from 500 ground positions spread across an area measuring approximately 95 metres by 65 metres. These technical specifications come directly from the event organisers.
The Tower will be surrounded by other forms of pyrotechnics, including fountains, spherical shells, traditional Maltese multi-break aerial fireworks and effects launched from both ground and tower positions.
Music will also play a central role. Organisers say much of the pyro-musical section has been designed around songs by Coldplay, with the fireworks choreographed to the accompanying music.
Four Different Fireworks Performances
Rather than presenting the evening as one continuous display, the programme has been divided into four sections.
The first will be a pyro-musical display, combining fireworks with music.
That will be followed by traditional Maltese aerial fireworks, including beraq shells and multi-break colour shells, keeping the local festa pyrotechnic tradition firmly within a show that is also introducing newer effects.
A grand finale featuring thousands of synchronised fireworks will then conclude the aerial section, according to the organisers.
The final part of the evening will move closer to the ground with mechanised Catherine wheels. These intricate moving fireworks remain one of the most distinctive visual elements of Maltese festa culture. Organisers say some of the pieces planned for Mqabba will measure up to nine metres in diameter.

For Mqabba, the night brings together two sides of Maltese festa pyrotechnics: the traditional aerial and mechanised work associated with village feasts, and a large-scale synchronised display built around newer effects.
