Fireworks illuminating the night, busy village streets and the familiar glow of Mellieħa’s parish church all form part of a photographic celebration of one of Malta’s best-known festa traditions.
Mellieħa-based photographer Dan J Mallia has revisited photographs he captured during last year’s festa as the locality looks ahead to another September filled with celebrations.
His images focus not only on the spectacle of the festa, but also on the people and small moments that give a Maltese village feast its atmosphere — from crowds gathering in the streets to food stalls, decorations and fireworks.
Mellieħa Prepares For Il-Vitorja
Mellieħa celebrates the Nativity of Our Lady, commonly associated locally with Il-Vitorja, on 8 September. The feast forms part of a festive period that traditionally builds throughout the opening days of the month.
This year’s feast falls on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, with the locality once again joining Naxxar, Senglea and Xagħra in celebrating the Nativity of Our Lady.
The days leading up to the feast traditionally bring band marches, religious functions, fireworks and activity around Mellieħa Parish Square, before celebrations reach their climax on 8 September.
Capturing More Than The Fireworks
Mallia’s selection offers a reminder that festa photography is as much about documenting community life as capturing the biggest spectacle of the night.
The photographer, who is based in Mellieħa, works across filmmaking and visual media.
With this year’s celebrations approaching, his photographs provide a colourful look back at the sights and atmosphere that make festa season such a distinctive part of Maltese summer life.
