Police Sergeant Johann Vella has returned home after spending weeks recovering at Mater Dei Hospital following the shooting in Ta’ Giorni, St Julian’s, on 24 July.
Vella was seriously injured while on duty during the incident and was initially reported to be in critical condition after suffering gunshot wounds to his face and neck.
His return home marks another major step in a recovery that has been followed closely by people across Malta.
From Critical Condition To Returning Home
Vella underwent surgery at Mater Dei following the shooting and spent the first part of his recovery in intensive care.
His condition subsequently improved enough for him to leave intensive care, before continuing his treatment at the hospital.
Now, almost four weeks after the incident, Vella has left Mater Dei and is continuing his recovery at home.
Sharing the positive update, Vella also expressed his gratitude towards the doctors and nurses at Mater Dei who cared for him throughout his time in hospital.
His recovery has drawn widespread support since the shooting, including an urgent blood donation appeal issued by the Malta Police Union in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
Returning home is another encouraging milestone for Vella as his recovery continues.
