Maltese weightlifter Nathan Mifsud has finished ninth in the 65kg category at the European Youth Weightlifting Championships in Pristina, Kosovo.
Representing Malta against some of Europe’s leading young weightlifters, Mifsud completed the competition with a combined total of 222kg.
A 100kg snatch and 122kg clean and jerk
Mifsud opened the snatch with 96kg before successfully moving up to 100kg.
He then began the clean and jerk with 117kg and followed it with a successful 122kg lift, giving him his final 222kg total and ninth place overall.
Competing despite illness
The Malta Weightlifting Association said Mifsud had been dealing with a gastrointestinal virus just one day before taking to the platform.
Despite the difficult preparation, he was still able to represent Malta and complete a strong series of lifts at European level.
The championships are being held in Pristina from 20 to 27 August, bringing together Europe’s youth and U15 weightlifting talent.
For Malta, Mifsud’s result adds another international appearance for one of the country’s emerging young weightlifters and another top ten European finish for the national programme.
