Dolly Parton has passed away at the age of 80, bringing to a close an extraordinary life and career that made her one of the most recognisable and loved figures in entertainment.

Her family confirmed her passing on Tuesday, 25 August. Across more than six decades, Parton built a musical legacy that travelled far beyond country music and reached generations of listeners around the world.

From Tennessee to an international icon

Born in Tennessee on 19 January 1946, Parton grew up in a large family with humble beginnings before making her way into music and eventually becoming a global star.

Her remarkable catalogue includes Jolene, Coat of Many Colors and I Will Always Love You. The latter found another enormous worldwide audience when Whitney Houston recorded her own version.

Parton sold more than 100 million records during her career, while her songwriting became one of the defining parts of her legacy.

Parton’s personality proved every bit as recognisable as her voice. Her humour, warmth and unmistakable style helped her connect with audiences well beyond the country music world.

She also found success on screen, including her memorable role in 9 to 5, which accompanied one of the best-known songs of her career.

Her achievements brought some of music’s highest honours, including multiple Grammy Awards and induction into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A legacy built on more than music

Away from the stage, Parton became equally respected for her philanthropy. Her Imagination Library grew into an international literacy programme providing books to children, while she supported education and numerous charitable causes throughout her life.

For millions of people, however, the memories will begin with the music. The unmistakable opening of Jolene, the energy of 9 to 5 and the emotion behind I Will Always Love You became part of a catalogue that crossed countries and generations.

Dolly Parton leaves behind far more than an extraordinary collection of songs. Her music, humour, generosity and distinctive personality created a legacy that will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
