Chocolate lovers have a particularly good excuse to reach for their favourite treat today, as 13 September is celebrated as International Chocolate Day.
Whether your choice is milk, dark or white chocolate, the day celebrates one of the world’s most popular treats in all its forms, from classic chocolate bars to cakes, pastries, spreads and hot chocolate.
Why is International Chocolate Day on 13 September?
The date coincides with the birthday of American confectioner Milton S. Hershey, who was born on 13 September 1857 and went on to build one of the best known names in the chocolate industry.
Hershey initially found success through the Lancaster Caramel Company. After developing an interest in chocolate making, he sold the caramel business and turned his attention towards producing milk chocolate on a much larger scale.
The Hershey Chocolate Company introduced its milk chocolate bar around 1900, while Hershey’s Kisses followed in 1907.
A legacy beyond chocolate
Milton Hershey’s legacy also extended beyond confectionery. He and his wife, Catherine, established a school for orphaned boys in 1909. Today, Milton Hershey School continues to provide education and support to children from lower income backgrounds.
International Chocolate Day should not be confused with World Chocolate Day, another chocolate themed occasion commonly marked on 7 July.
So, if there happens to be some chocolate waiting in the cupboard today, 13 September gives you another reason to enjoy it.
