Late Professor Ġorġ Mallia receives Gold Award at IĠM Awards

The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has shared a tribute to the late Professor Ġorġ Mallia, who was awarded the Gold Award at this year’s Malta Journalism Awards.

The awards ceremony was held on Saturday evening at San Anton Palace, with President Myriam Spiteri Debono presiding.

Mallia, who passed away earlier this year aged 68, was recognised for his contribution to journalism and the media in Malta.

As a lecturer at the University of Malta, Professor Mallia taught and mentored many of the journalists working in Malta today. He encouraged his students to think critically and understand the importance of ethics and responsibility in journalism.

His work also extended beyond teaching. Mallia was a well-known cartoonist and contributed to discussions on the media, freedom of expression and the development of journalism in Malta.

The IĠM described Professor Mallia’s impact on Malta’s media landscape as “immeasurable”, adding that his legacy continues to live on through the work produced by newsrooms across the country.
