A rescue dog named Elko has made a very fitting trip to Malta after a DNA test revealed a surprising connection to the islands.
Travel influencer @awayonearth shared that, after three years and more than 40 countries together, he finally received Elko’s DNA results — and discovered that the rescue pup is 6.2% Maltese.
The result came as a surprise, so the pair decided that Malta had to be their next destination.
During the trip, Elko got a proper taste of the islands. According to posts shared online, he explored Valletta, went for a swim in the Mediterranean, visited Gozo, and ticked off several of Malta’s well-known spots.
For a dog who has already travelled widely with his owner, Malta became more than just another stop on the map. It was a visit to what they jokingly called his roots.
The story quickly caught attention online, with many viewers loving the idea of a rescue dog travelling all the way to Malta after a DNA test result.
It is a lighthearted travel moment, but also a sweet reminder of the bond between pets and their owners — especially when adventures are shared across countries, coastlines and, apparently, DNA results too.
