Andrea Mifsud and Marie Claire Aquilina have been crowned the 2026 National Time Trial Champions after strong performances in this year’s championships organised by the Malta Cycling Federation.
The event was held on Sunday, 28 June 2026, on the Coast Road circuit at Salini. Riders completed five laps of the course, covering a total distance of 30 kilometres.
In the Elite Men’s category, Andrea Mifsud of Team Polti Visit Malta claimed his first National Time Trial title. He crossed the finish line in 38:02.88, delivering a standout performance.
The win comes only weeks after Mifsud made history as the first Maltese cyclist to compete in the Giro d’Italia, adding another important milestone to his cycling year.
Aidan Buttigieg, also representing Team Polti Visit Malta, finished second. Buttigieg had been the defending champion for the past three editions and ended the race 36.09 seconds behind Mifsud.
John Camilleri of Bike it Up Racing completed the Elite Men’s podium in third place with a time of 40:09.23.
In the Elite Women’s category, Marie Claire Aquilina of Team Greens secured her eighth National Time Trial title. Aquilina finished the course in 49:20.77.
She was followed by her Team Greens teammates Michelle Vella Wood, who placed second in 51:26.51, and Katinka Zahra Lehtonen, who finished third in 1:07:21.33.
The Masters categories also saw strong racing. In the Masters 40+ category, Etienne Bonello of Team Greens was crowned National Champion with a winning time of 43:53.98.
Arek Kawalec, also of Team Greens, finished second in 44:35.49, while Liran Ben Ari of The Cyclists by Agones placed third in 45:07.28.
In the Masters 50+ National Championship, Adrian Bezzina of The Cyclists by Agones took the title after completing the course in 46:58.48. Former National Champion David Cushing of Bike it Up Racing finished second in 50:40.25.
The Junior category was won by Andrei Cassone of The Cyclists by Agones, who claimed the National Championship title with a time of 44:39.92. His teammate Ryan Gatt finished second in 48:46.48.
Youth titles were decided earlier in the year during the National Youth Time Trial Championships, held on Sunday, 17 May 2026, in Xewkija, Gozo. The event formed part of an activity organised by D Sports Lab.
In the Under-16 Boys category, Harry Carmont of Mosta Cycling Club became National Champion after completing the 17.5km course in 27:40.38. Neil Cassar of Team Greens finished second in 28:49.62, while Liam Daly of Shamrock Stars placed third in 29:09.63.
In the Under-16 Girls category, Nina Curmi of D Sports Lab won the title with a time of 34:54.51. Katie-Anne Vella Wood of Team Greens finished close behind in second place with 35:00.12.
Ethan Cumbo of Team Greens won the Under-14 Boys category, completing the 12.5km course in 21:00.82. Kurt Grech of Mosta Cycling Club finished second in 29:04.76, while Ayden Vella of D Sports Lab placed third in 32:36.06.
In the Under-14 Girls category, Mickaya Fava of Shamrock Stars was crowned National Champion with a time of 26:54.76.
Mosta Cycling Club enjoyed a clean sweep in the Under-12 Boys category. Raphael Buhagiar won the title after completing the 7.5km course in 14:45.20, followed by Zachary Vella in 14:47.75 and Nolan Tabone in 15:01.44.
The championships concluded with the presentation of awards by Malta Cycling Federation officials John Zammit, Joe Bajada and Daniel Borg Olivier, who serve as President, General Secretary and Treasurer of the Federation respectively.
