An 11-year-old student from Rabat Primary School has been recognised for her kindness and care towards others.
Jayana Chircop was presented with the Pope John XXIII Award for Kindness 2026 during a ceremony held at Sant’Anton Palace. The award was given by President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono.
The award is organised by the Peace Lab, led by Fr Dionysius Mintoff, and celebrates children who regularly show kindness to other children in their everyday lives.
Jayana, who attends Rabat Primary School within St Nicholas College, was nominated by the school’s leadership.
Her nomination highlighted the support she gives to her classmate Cataleya Borg, who needs assistance and comfort during the school day. Jayana helps her willingly and without being asked, offering friendship, encouragement, and support in a natural and caring way.
Through her actions, Jayana helps Cataleya feel welcomed and included in the classroom, just like the rest of her classmates.
The school also noted how Jayana makes an effort during special school occasions to ensure that Cataleya can take part and enjoy the moment with her friends. These small but meaningful gestures help create a sense of belonging, where every child feels appreciated and loved.
During the ceremony, President Myriam Spiteri Debono described Jayana’s genuine kindness as an example that adults should also follow. She said the award is a reminder that even the smallest gestures can have a deep effect on others.
The President mentioned simple acts such as a word of encouragement, a hand offered in friendship, a moment of inclusion, or an act of support, saying these can change another person’s experience in ways that may be greater than we realise.
President Spiteri Debono also recognised the work of Fr Dionysius Mintoff, particularly his direct service to those in need over 70 years of priesthood. His work has long placed inclusion, solidarity, and generosity at its heart.
Present for the ceremony were Jayana Chircop and Cataleya Borg, together with their parents and teachers. Also attending were Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri, and Minister for Social Policy and the Family Michael Falzon, who was also representing the Prime Minister.
Jayana’s story is a warm reminder that kindness does not always need grand gestures. Sometimes, it is found in the simple choice to help, include, and care for someone every day.
