Malta’s rising triathlon stars Kai Azzopardi and Ryan Muscat delivered another strong international performance at the 2026 World Triathlon Development Regional Cup in Gallipoli, Türkiye.
The event was held on 27 June and brought together a competitive field of elite athletes from across Europe. The race was held over sprint distance, made up of a 750m swim, 20km bike ride, and 5km run.
Competing in the Elite Men’s race, both Maltese athletes produced encouraging results.
Kai Azzopardi secured an impressive 8th place finish, earning a coveted top 10 result in a field where every second mattered. His performance also earned him 72 World Triathlon ranking points.
Following the result, Azzopardi has climbed to 260th in the European Elite Rankings and 532nd in the World Triathlon Elite Rankings. According to the Malta Triathlon Federation, he is currently the only Maltese athlete featured in the World Triathlon Elite Rankings.
Ryan Muscat also delivered a composed and determined performance, finishing in 19th place. His result reflects the steady progress he continues to make while racing against some of Europe’s strongest emerging elite athletes.
For both athletes, the race in Türkiye marks another important step in their international development.
The World Triathlon Development Regional Cup series gives emerging athletes the chance to compete at a high level, gain valuable international experience, and earn ranking points.
Azzopardi and Muscat have both already represented Malta across several major competitions, including the Commonwealth Youth Games, World Triathlon Development Cups, European Championships, and World Championship events.
Their latest results continue to strengthen Malta’s presence on the international triathlon stage and show the progress being made by local endurance athletes.
