Two people were brought to safety this evening following a rescue operation at Ta’ Maria Cave in Gnejna.
According to Civil Protection Malta, rescuers from Fire Stations 3, 5 and 7 responded after two individuals required assistance to return to a safe location.
Once on site, three CPD rescue swimmers entered the water and swam into the cave to reach the two people. Two CPD RIBs were also deployed to assist in the operation.
Due to the rough sea conditions, the rescue was carried out in close coordination with the Armed Forces of Malta, with an AFM helicopter deployed to safely evacuate both individuals. An AFM rescue boat was also on scene to provide additional support.
Civil Protection Malta said the operation was completed successfully, and both people were brought to safety.
The department also thanked the Armed Forces of Malta, the Malta Police Force, and the Emergency Department at Mater Dei Hospital for their assistance and cooperation throughout the rescue.
The incident serves as another reminder for the public to take extra care around the coast, especially when sea conditions are rough. Caves, cliffs, and swimming areas can become dangerous quickly when waves and currents pick up.
