The Malta Police Force is increasing its cooperation with European police forces, with foreign officers set to assist Maltese officers during the summer period.
According to the Malta Police Force, this follows previous cooperation in which Maltese police officers assisted the French Police in France last year as part of security operations linked to a United Nations conference.
This month, a French police officer will be in Malta to assist the Malta Police Force. In August, Italian police officers are also expected to be in Malta, where they will accompany Maltese officers during duties.
The foreign officers will wear their own national uniforms, but they will not be armed and will not have executive powers. They will work alongside Maltese officers on preventive patrols and duties related to public order.
The arrangement is intended to strengthen cooperation between law enforcement agencies and support public safety, particularly during the busy summer months.
The Malta Police Force said requests for foreign police services to send officers through exchange arrangements show the strong level of cooperation that exists between the respective law enforcement agencies.
Similar cooperation has already taken place between Malta and Italy in recent years, with Italian officers supporting patrols in busy tourist areas while remaining unarmed and without executive powers.
For Malta, this cooperation adds another layer of support to local policing during one of the busiest times of the year, especially in areas with large numbers of visitors and public events.
