Some goodbyes stay with us quietly.
Today, 5 July, is marked as Pet Remembrance Day, a day dedicated to remembering the pets who have passed away and the impact they had on our lives.
For many people, pets are not “just animals”.
They are the welcome at the door, the shadow following us from room to room, the warm spot on the sofa, the little routine that made a normal day feel familiar.
They are the walk we still remember, the bowl we could not move for weeks, the toy we kept, the sound we still expect to hear.
Pet Remembrance Day is not only about sadness. It is also about gratitude.
It is a day to remember the love they gave us, the funny habits that made us laugh, and the comfort they brought during moments when words were not needed.
Some people may mark the day by looking through old photos. Others may light a candle, visit a favourite walking place, share a memory online, or simply take a quiet moment to think of them.
There is no right way to remember a pet. Grief looks different for everyone.
What matters is that the bond is respected.
Pets become part of our homes in ways that are difficult to explain until they are no longer physically there. Their absence can feel small and huge at the same time.
A missing pawstep.
An empty corner.
A habit we still keep without thinking.
Pet Remembrance Day gives people permission to talk about that loss, and to celebrate the joy that came before it.
There are also other remembrance days linked to pet loss. World Pet Memorial Day is marked on the second Tuesday of June, while National Pet Memorial Day is observed on the second Sunday of September.
But whatever the date, the message is the same: the animals we love leave something behind.
So today, remember their name.
Remember the way they looked at you.
Remember the chaos, the cuddles, the loyalty, the noise, the softness.
Remember the love.
They may be gone, but the pawprints stay.
