Floriana made a strong start to their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Shamrock Rovers in the first leg of the first qualifying round.
The Greens now take a two-goal lead into the second leg, which will be played in Dublin on Tuesday. It puts Floriana in a promising position as they look to continue their European journey.
The winner of this tie will go on to face either Ararat of Armenia or Riga FC of Latvia in the second qualifying round.
Floriana coach Daniel Portela started with a 4-2-3-1 formation and handed debuts to new signings Kauan and Robert Muric. Guilherme Cioletti started in goal, with Zammit Lonardelli, Spiteri, Kauan and Beerman in defence. Vella and Kurtalic played in midfield, while Muric, Varela and Dervisagic supported striker Mustapha Jah.
Floriana also had new additions Gaston Romano, Ange Curtis N’Dri and Tomislav Gudelj among the substitutes.
Shamrock Rovers started brightly and had an early chance on 12 minutes when Michael Noonan headed over from close range following a cross by Dylan Watts.
Floriana began to grow into the match and went close midway through the first half. Robert Muric tested goalkeeper Ed McGinty with a shot from outside the area, before another good move involving Fede Varela, Mustapha Jah and Dervisagic ended with a shot rising just over the bar.
The visitors also threatened before the break, with Noonan seeing one effort blocked and another deflected for a corner. However, it was Floriana who found the important breakthrough just before half-time.
Varela took a quick free-kick and picked out Muric on the right. The Croatian winger rounded a defender before curling a fine effort past McGinty from the edge of the area to make it 1-0.
The match took another turn in the 58th minute when Shamrock Rovers were reduced to ten men. Matthew Healy was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession.
Floriana pushed to make the extra man count. Muric remained one of the main threats, delivering dangerous balls and forcing the Shamrock Rovers defence to stay alert.
The second goal arrived in the 79th minute. Muric found Varela on the right, whose shot was only partly saved by McGinty. Mustapha Jah reacted well and placed the ball into the net to double Floriana’s lead.
The Greens nearly added another shortly after, when substitute Tomislav Gudelj attempted an overhead kick from a Zachary Scerri cross.
Shamrock Rovers pushed late on in search of an away goal, and Maleace Asamoah came close in the final moments, but his angled effort was cleared off the line.
Floriana held firm to secure a valuable 2-0 victory and a memorable European result. The focus now shifts to Dublin, where the Greens will try to finish the job and move into the next round.
