Ħamrun Spartans kept their UEFA Conference League campaign alive with a determined 1-1 draw against NS Runavik in Klaksvik, a result that leaves everything open ahead of the second leg in Malta.
For Stefano Sanderra’s side, this was more than just a useful away draw. The Spartans had endured a far from ideal build-up, arriving in the Faroe Islands only the day before the match and having very little time to settle before taking to the pitch.
Given those circumstances, Ħamrun’s performance showed plenty of discipline and character.
Runavik took the lead on 26 minutes when Petur Knudsen was given space from a corner and headed past Celio to put the hosts in front.
Ħamrun had earlier threatened through Jake Grech, who fired over after the Runavik defence failed to clear a cross. Damir Ceter also had a chance to bring the Spartans level before half-time, but his effort was stopped by goalkeeper Tom Amos.
The Spartans remained in the contest, with Jack Ipalibo making an important block late in the first half to keep the deficit at one goal.
After the break, Ħamrun tried to raise the tempo, though clear openings were still hard to find. Their patience was rewarded in the 56th minute when Matthew Guillaumier found Lucas Villela inside the area. Villela moved the ball across the box and Tobias Bjornstad arrived to finish and make it 1-1.
The equaliser gave Ħamrun fresh belief. Jake Grech tested Amos from the edge of the area on 64 minutes, while the Spartans continued to push when opportunities appeared.
There was also concern late on when Emerson Marcelina had to be replaced after picking up an injury. Ħamrun then almost snatched victory near the end, as substitute Ante Coric delivered a dangerous cross, but Guillaumier could not connect in front of goal.
Still, the draw leaves the Spartans in a strong position ahead of Wednesday’s return leg at the Centenary Stadium.
While Ħamrun returned from the Faroe Islands with plenty to build on, Marsaxlokk had a much more difficult night in their UEFA Conference League first qualifying round tie.
Marsaxlokk were beaten 3-0 by Armenian side Pyunik at the Centenary Stadium and now face a major challenge in the return leg.
The Maltese side started positively, but Pyunik slowly took control of the match. Momo Yansane gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot five minutes before half-time after Juan Corbalan was judged to have committed a foul inside the area.
Marsaxlokk had already suffered an early blow when Leandro Aguirre was forced off injured midway through the first half and replaced by Oleksy Bykov.
Pyunik doubled their advantage shortly after the restart through Artak Dashyan, who found the net with a low effort beyond Christoffer Mafoumbi.
Marsaxlokk coach Vincenzo Potenza responded with changes, bringing on José Arias, Matheus Silva and Nikolai Muscat, but the Armenian side remained in control.
Mikhail Kovalenko then made it 3-0 with a composed finish from outside the area, leaving Marsaxlokk with a steep mountain to climb in the second leg.
The hosts had late chances through Dodo and Silva, but neither managed to reduce the deficit.
It was a mixed night for Maltese football in Europe: Ħamrun will feel they have given themselves a real platform to progress, while Marsaxlokk will need a big response to keep their campaign alive.
