Argentina are through to the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals after defeating Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in a dramatic quarter-final in Kansas City.
The defending champions made the perfect start when Alexis Mac Allister headed home from a Lionel Messi corner in the 10th minute. Switzerland fought back in the second half, with Dan Ndoye levelling the score to send the match into extra time.
Switzerland’s task became even harder after Breel Embolo was sent off in the 72nd minute following a VAR review, leaving the Swiss to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
With penalties looming, Julián Álvarez produced a stunning long-range strike in the 112th minute before Lautaro Martínez added a third in stoppage time of extra time to seal Argentina’s place in the last four.
The victory keeps Argentina’s hopes of retaining the World Cup alive, with England now awaiting them in what promises to be one of the tournament’s biggest semi-finals.
