The Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi debate has taken another interesting turn.
According to a survey of around 100 former professional footballers conducted by The Athletic, 66% said they believe Cristiano Ronaldo has had the better overall career, while 34% chose Lionel Messi.
That result gives Ronaldo the edge when it comes to how former players view career achievements, longevity, records and success across different clubs and leagues.
However, the same survey produced a different answer when the question changed.
When the former footballers were asked which player they would rather have played alongside, 72% chose Lionel Messi.
That contrast says a lot about how the two football icons are often judged.
Ronaldo is frequently praised for his mentality, goal-scoring consistency, physical development, Champions League record and ability to succeed in different football environments. His career has taken him from Sporting CP to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr, while also becoming Portugal’s most famous football figure.
Messi, on the other hand, is often admired for his natural style, creativity, passing, dribbling and the way he brings others into the game. For many players, that may explain why he was the preferred choice as a teammate, even among some who gave Ronaldo the better-career vote.
The poll does not settle the debate, and it probably never will. Instead, it highlights the difference between two questions football fans often mix together: who had the better career, and who would you rather share the pitch with?
For now, the answer from these former players seems to be: Ronaldo for career, Messi for playing alongside.
And that is exactly why this debate still refuses to fade.
