Spain are world champions
Spain have won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1–0 following extra time.
The final remained goalless throughout the opening 90 minutes at New York New Jersey Stadium, sending the two countries into an additional half-hour of play.
Spain eventually found the breakthrough through Ferran Torres in the 106th minute, before protecting their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
Argentina reduced to 10 players
Spain controlled much of the match but repeatedly found Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez standing in their way.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult when Enzo Fernández was sent off during stoppage time at the end of the second half, leaving the defending champions to play extra time with 10 players.
Spain took advantage during the first period of extra time, with Torres scoring the only goal of the final.
A second World Cup for Spain
The victory gives Spain their second men’s World Cup title, following the country’s first triumph in South Africa in 2010.
La Roja arrived at the tournament as the reigning European champions and have now added the biggest prize in international football to their recent success.
They also become the first champions of the expanded 48-team World Cup, which featured 104 matches across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Argentina’s reign comes to an end
Argentina entered the match hoping to defend the trophy won in Qatar in 2022 and become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cups.
However, Spain’s extra-time goal brought their title defence to an end.
After 90 goalless minutes and a tense additional period, Spain held firm to claim a historic victory and add a second star above their badge.
