Shakira Has Now Featured at More World Cup Editions Than Gerard Piqué
Shakira has added another chapter to her long-running relationship with the FIFA World Cup, taking her total to four different tournament editions.
The Colombian singer performed alongside Burna Boy during the 2026 opening ceremony in Mexico City on 11 June. The pair presented Dai Dai, the official song of the tournament, before the opening match.
She later returned to the stage on 19 July for the first halftime show held during a FIFA World Cup final, once again performing with Burna Boy.
A World Cup journey stretching back 20 years
Shakira’s first World Cup ceremony appearance came in Germany in 2006, when she performed Hips Don’t Lie with Wyclef Jean during the closing ceremony.
She returned in South Africa four years later with Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), one of the songs most closely associated with the 2010 tournament.
Her third tournament came in Brazil in 2014. Shakira performed La La La (Brazil 2014) with Carlinhos Brown during the closing ceremony at the Maracanã.
Her appearances can therefore be counted across four editions:
Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014 and Canada, Mexico and the United States 2026.
One more tournament than Piqué
The milestone has also produced a light-hearted comparison with Shakira’s former partner, Gerard Piqué.
The former Barcelona defender represented Spain at three World Cups: 2010, 2014 and 2018. He was part of the Spanish squad that lifted the trophy in South Africa in 2010.
This means Shakira has now been involved as a performer at four World Cup editions, while Piqué played at three.
The comparison refers to the number of different tournaments in which they participated, rather than individual matches or performances.
Beyond the playful statistic, the milestone shows just how closely Shakira’s music has become linked with the World Cup over the past two decades.
