Lamine Yamal has opened up about a special exchange with Lionel Messi following Spain’s victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with Ferran Torres scoring the winning goal during extra time. The result gave Spain its second men’s World Cup title, following its first triumph in 2010.
After the final whistle, Yamal approached Messi to show his respect. The 19-year-old later explained that Messi encouraged him to continue following his own path and told him that the future belongs to the new generation.
Yamal said the words meant as much to him as the gold medal around his neck.
A Meeting Between Two Generations
The moment carried additional meaning because Yamal has long spoken respectfully about Messi, who spent most of his club career at Barcelona.
Their connection has also attracted attention because of a photograph taken in 2007, when a young Messi was pictured with Yamal while he was still a baby during a charity calendar photoshoot. Years later, the pair found themselves facing one another in a World Cup final.
Yamal has developed into one of football’s leading young talents, while Messi remains one of the sport’s most celebrated players.
For the young Spaniard, receiving encouragement from someone he has admired throughout his life made an already historic evening even more memorable.
