A fire in the common area of a block of apartments in Żebbuġ, Malta, was brought under control this afternoon in an operation that ended with no injuries reported.
According to Civil Protection Malta, firefighters from Stations 1 and 4 responded to the incident after thick smoke spread quickly through the building.
As a precaution, residents were evacuated while crews worked to control the fire and secure the area.
One of the most reassuring parts of the operation was that an elderly resident was safely rescued using the turntable ladder. Firefighters also rescued two cats and one dog, making sure that both residents and pets were brought to safety.
Once the flames were extinguished, crews continued with ventilation and cooling operations. This work was carried out to remove the remaining smoke and to eliminate any possible risk of the fire reigniting.
Civil Protection Malta said that no injuries were reported.
The emergency response also involved officers from The Malta Police Force District 7, the Rapid Intervention Unit, and a medical team from Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department, showing a strong coordinated effort across services.
While the incident was clearly a serious one, the confirmed outcome is a positive one: residents were evacuated, vulnerable occupants were assisted, animals were rescued, and emergency teams managed to prevent injuries.
