Sergeant Johann Vella No Longer in Critical Condition Following Ta’ Giorni Shooting
There has been a positive update on the condition of police officer Johann Vella, who was seriously injured during Friday’s shooting in Ta’ Giorni.
The Special Intervention Unit sergeant is no longer considered to be in danger of dying and is now reported to be in a stable condition.
He remains under care in the Intensive Therapy Unit at Mater Dei Hospital after suffering gunshot wounds to his face, neck and leg.
Condition improves after emergency treatment
Vella was seriously wounded while officers were responding to an armed confrontation at a property in Ta’ Giorni.
Police said Special Intervention Unit officers had attempted to reach colleagues trapped inside the property when the gunman allegedly opened fire again, striking Vella.
He received treatment at the scene before being taken urgently to Mater Dei Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
The first updates described his condition as critical. The latest information that he is now stable therefore brings some welcome relief to his relatives, colleagues and the wider public.
Second officer discharged from hospital
A second officer, Constable Omar Sharif, was also injured during the incident.
His injuries were described as less serious, and he has since been discharged from hospital.
Both officers were named publicly following the shooting, which prompted a strong wave of support from colleagues and members of the community.
Hundreds respond to blood-donation appeal
The Malta Police Union organised a blood-donation drive following the incident.
According to reports, 149 people donated on Friday, followed by another 98 donors on Saturday, as police officers, friends and members of the public came forward to help.
The response reflected the concern felt across Malta after news emerged that an officer had been critically injured while carrying out his duties.
Investigation remains ongoing
Two brothers were arrested in connection with the shooting and were expected to face court proceedings.
Police said the confrontation may have been linked to a dispute over development on neighbouring land. Investigations remain ongoing, and any suspects are presumed innocent unless and until found guilty by a court.
For now, attention remains firmly on Johann Vella’s recovery.
