Lydon ‘Beqqu’ Chircop Set for Major International Fight in Jeddah
Maltese boxer Lydon “Beqqu” Chircop is preparing for one of the biggest opportunities of his professional career as he steps into the ring in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Chircop will face unbeaten Saudi fighter Mohammed Alakel in a six-round lightweight contest at the Jeddah Superdome on Saturday, 25 July.
The bout forms part of the international boxing event “The Comeback”, which is headlined by former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua against Albania’s Kristian Prenga.
A major stage for Maltese boxing
Chircop’s appearance places Maltese boxing on a card featuring world champions, unbeaten prospects and established international names.
The event will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN, giving the Maltese fighter an opportunity to perform before a much larger audience than is normally available on the local boxing scene.
The card also includes two world-title fights. Hamzah Sheeraz is scheduled to defend his WBO super-middleweight title against Simon Zachenhuber, while Josh Kelly will defend the IBF junior-middleweight crown against Caoimhin Agyarko.
Chircop faces an unbeaten opponent
Mohammed Alakel enters the contest with an unbeaten professional record of eight victories from eight fights.
Chircop is listed with a professional record of eight wins and four defeats, including four victories by knockout. The Maltese boxer therefore brings more professional bouts into the contest, although Alakel will have the advantage of competing in front of a home crowd.
The fight is scheduled for six rounds and has been announced as a lightweight contest by organisers.
Part of ‘The Comeback’
The event has been organised as part of Jeddah Season in collaboration with Riyadh Season, Matchroom, Sela and Goldstar.
Fight week included official arrivals, a press conference and weigh-in before Saturday’s card at the Jeddah Superdome.
Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight return against Kristian Prenga tops the bill, with the former world champion looking to continue his path towards another major fight.
For Chircop, however, the evening represents a significant moment in its own right.
Competing against an unbeaten opponent on such a prominent international card offers him the chance to demonstrate the standard of Maltese boxing on a global platform.
Whatever the final result, stepping through the ropes in Jeddah marks an important achievement for both Chircop and the local boxing community supporting him.
