Cats have lived alongside humans for thousands of years, yet many of their abilities remain surprisingly unfamiliar to us. Behind the naps, playful behaviour and occasional midnight zoomies is an animal equipped with some remarkable senses and physical features.
Here are eight fascinating facts that may change the way you look at your cat.
1. Cats cannot taste sweetness
Your cat is unlikely to share your love of chocolate, cake or ice cream—and there is a biological reason for it.
Cats lack a functioning version of Tas1r2, one of the genes needed to form the receptor that detects sweet flavours. Research has found that this gene has become a pseudogene in cats, helping to explain why they generally show little interest in sugary foods.
As obligate carnivores, cats evolved to obtain the nutrients they need primarily from animal-based food rather than sweet fruit or carbohydrates.
2. They can hear sounds humans cannot
A cat may suddenly stare towards a wall or prick up its ears while you hear absolutely nothing. That does not necessarily mean it is imagining things.
Research has measured the domestic cat’s hearing range at approximately 48 Hz to 85 kHz under the study conditions. This extends well into ultrasound and far beyond the upper limit of human hearing.
That heightened sensitivity can help cats detect the high-pitched sounds produced by small prey such as rodents.
3. The tiny spines on their tongues are hollow
A cat’s rough tongue is covered with small, backward-facing structures known as papillae. They are made from keratin—the same material found in hair and claws—but their design is more sophisticated than it appears.
Researchers discovered that the tips of these papillae contain tiny U-shaped hollows. These act like miniature wicks, drawing saliva from the mouth and distributing it through the fur while the cat grooms itself.
In other words, a cat’s tongue works like a remarkably efficient built-in hairbrush.
4. Cats sweat through their paw pads
Unlike humans, cats do not have sweat glands spread across most of their bodies. Their foot and toe pads contain eccrine sweat glands, meaning that much of the visible sweating they produce comes through their paws.
This is why a cat may occasionally leave faint, damp pawprints on a surface. However, sweating is only a limited part of how cats manage their body temperature.
5. Cats have a third eyelid
In addition to their upper and lower eyelids, cats possess a third eyelid known as the nictitating membrane.
It sits in the inner corner of the eye and provides an additional protective layer while also supporting the eye’s surface. It is usually hidden, although part of it may briefly become visible when a cat is sleepy.
A third eyelid that remains unusually prominent can sometimes be associated with an eye or health problem and should be checked by a veterinarian.
6. Their whiskers are sophisticated touch sensors
Whiskers are not simply longer versions of ordinary fur. When a whisker touches an object, the force travels along its shaft to highly sensitive mechanoreceptors in the follicle at its base.
This allows a cat to gather information about nearby objects and movement, which is particularly useful when navigating tight spaces or moving in low light.
Because whiskers serve an important sensory purpose, they should never be cut or trimmed for cosmetic reasons.
7. Their collarbones are very different from ours
A domestic cat does have clavicles, but they are small, reduced bones rather than the firmly braced collarbones found in humans.
Because the front limbs are not locked to the torso in the same way as ours, a cat’s shoulder blades have greater freedom of movement. This contributes to the flexible, long-striding movement that makes cats such agile runners and climbers.
8. Cats can “taste” certain scents
Have you ever seen a cat sniff something and then hold its mouth slightly open with an unusual expression? This is known as the Flehmen response.
Cats have a vomeronasal organ—also called Jacobson’s organ—positioned between the nasal area and the roof of the mouth. The Flehmen response helps them examine chemical signals in scents, including those involved in communication with other cats.
So, when a cat appears to be pulling a funny face after smelling something, it may actually be carrying out a detailed chemical investigation.
Cats are more remarkable than they appear
