An injured crew member has been airlifted from an oil tanker more than 100 nautical miles east of Malta following a medical emergency at sea.
The operation took place on Wednesday evening after a crew member aboard the tanker suffered a hand injury.
The Armed Forces of Malta, through Rescue Coordination Centre Malta, coordinated a medical evacuation and dispatched an AFM helicopter to reach the vessel.
Winched From The Oil Tanker
After arriving at the tanker’s location, the AFM helicopter crew carried out a winching operation to evacuate the injured crew member from the vessel.
The patient was safely brought aboard the helicopter before being flown back to Malta.
On arrival, he was handed over to Mater Dei Hospital personnel for further medical treatment.
The operation took place more than 100 nautical miles east of Malta, requiring the AFM helicopter to travel a considerable distance offshore to reach the vessel.
Another Medical Evacuation At Sea
The rescue comes just days after the Armed Forces carried out another medical evacuation involving a passenger aboard a cruise liner located between Malta and Greece.
In that operation, an AFM helicopter rendezvoused with the cruise ship before transferring the patient and transporting them to Malta for further medical care.
Both operations were coordinated through RCC Malta, which is responsible for coordinating search-and-rescue operations within Malta’s search-and-rescue region.
The latest mission ended with the injured crew member safely brought to Malta and transferred into the care of medical professionals.
