More than 1.2 million passengers travelled through Malta International Airport during August 2026, highlighting the scale of Malta’s peak summer travel period.
Malta International Airport’s August traffic results show that 1,204,465 passenger movements were recorded during the month, an increase of 12.3% compared with August 2025.
More than 7,200 aircraft movements in one month
The busy month was not limited to the terminal. More than 7,200 aircraft take-offs and landings were recorded during August, with aircraft movements increasing by 12.4% compared with the same month last year.
Available seat capacity grew even faster, rising by 15.2%. Despite the additional seats, demand remained high, with the airport recording a seat load factor of 89.3%.
That means close to nine out of every ten available airline seats were occupied during the month.
Italy remains Malta’s biggest passenger market
Italy was Malta International Airport’s largest passenger market for the second consecutive month, accounting for 20.6% of total August traffic.
Rome Fiumicino was the most popular airport for travel between Malta and Italy. It was also the most popular individual airport across Malta International Airport’s network of more than 120 destinations.
The United Kingdom remained the second-largest market, with passenger traffic increasing by 10% compared with August 2025.
Poland records almost 50% growth
One of the standout figures came from Poland, where passenger traffic increased by 49.6% year on year. The surge placed Poland third among Malta International Airport’s leading markets for August.
Germany ranked fourth despite passenger numbers falling by 4.8%, while traffic between Malta and France declined by 10.8%.
Another exceptionally busy summer month
The August figures follow an already busy July, when almost 1.2 million passenger movements were recorded at Malta International Airport.
Together, the figures illustrate the enormous volume of people moving through Malta’s only airport during the height of summer, with August alone averaging roughly 38,850 passenger movements every day.
With more than 1.2 million passenger movements in a single month and close to nine in every ten available seats occupied, August proved another particularly busy month for Malta’s aviation sector.
