Malta is getting a short break from the unsettled weather on Saturday, but the rain is not finished with us yet.
The latest outlook indicates mainly dry conditions for Saturday, 19 September, before showers and thunderstorms return from Sunday and remain possible over the following days.
Malta’s Met Office has linked the recent unstable weather to an area of low pressure moving towards the eastern Mediterranean, creating conditions favourable for showers and thunderstorms across the Maltese Islands.
Sunday brings another chance of thunderstorms
The forecast shared by It-Temp Madwarna puts the chance of rain at 75% on Sunday, with a 65% probability of thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to reach around 29°C during the day and fall to around 22°C overnight.
Winds are expected to be light from the north-west before becoming moderate and variable later in the day.
Conditions may also vary considerably from one locality to another. The Met Office has explained that expected showers are likely to remain highly localised, meaning one part of Malta could experience significant rain while another sees much less.
September has already delivered dramatic weather
Friday morning’s thunderstorms caused temperatures to fall from 26°C to 19°C in just one hour, according to information provided by the Met Office. Despite the recent storms, only 28.4mm of rain had been measured during September by Friday, less than half the monthly average of 59.2mm.
Further showers and thunderstorms are expected into next week, so anyone making outdoor plans over the coming days may want to keep an eye on the latest forecast, particularly as local conditions can change quickly.
