A new dedicated helpline, 1779, has been launched in Malta to support people affected by image-based sexual abuse, including the sharing or threatened sharing of intimate images without consent.
The service offers a confidential and non-judgemental point of contact for people who need emotional support, safety-focused guidance and information about the options available to them. The launch was confirmed on 22 September.
What support is available through 1779?
People contacting the helpline can receive emotional support and guidance on practical steps they may be able to take. Where necessary, they can also be referred to other relevant services.
The service specifically addresses abuse involving intimate images, sometimes referred to as “revenge porn”. This can include both the non-consensual distribution of intimate material and threats to share it.
Similar online risks are already recognised by Malta’s BeSmartOnline initiative, which identifies the non-consensual sharing of intimate images among the issues it works to address.

People affected by crime in Malta can also contact the National Support Line for Victims of Crime on 116006. The Malta Police Force states that the service operates seven days a week from 7.30am until 7.30pm and can provide emotional support, legal guidance and information.
Anyone facing immediate danger should call 112. Reports involving cybercrime can also be made to the police, with specialised cases referred to the appropriate units.
The new 1779 service gives people experiencing this particularly invasive form of abuse another direct route to confidential help and information.
