Award-Winning Short Film ‘Decode Me’ by Sharon Sibyl Gatt Qualifies for Oscar Consideration

Maltese filmmaker Sharon Sibyl Gatt is taking her award-winning short film Decode Me to the international stage, with the production now qualifying for consideration in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.

The psychological drama explores autism, identity, masking and self-acceptance, and has already made an impact on the international festival circuit, securing more than 15 official selections, five wins and four award nominations.

Inspired by Gatt’s own experience as a late-diagnosed neurodivergent woman, Decode Me follows Jane, an autistic programmer who struggles with the pressure to conform while trying to understand and accept her identity. She faces probing questions from her confidante, Elizabeth, who is concerned about Jane’s inner turmoil.

Originally from Malta, Gatt is now based in London. Multilingual from a young age, she developed a passion for storytelling and languages, which led her towards acting and training at institutions including RADA, the Actors Centre and Shakespeare’s Globe.

Speaking about the film, Gatt said: “As a Maltese filmmaker, I felt a deep responsibility to create a film that authentically represents the lived experience of autistic women without resorting to stereotypes. Portrayals of autistic women in the media are limited, simplified or viewed through a male lens. This film seeks to challenge that narrative by giving a voice to those who are rarely heard.”
