Sometimes nature gets the Halloween theme exactly right.
A spectacular sunset captured over Filfla created the appearance of a glowing jack-o’-lantern in the sky, with breaks in the dark clouds forming what looks remarkably like a pair of eyes and a crooked smile.
The photograph was taken by Marika Caruana on 20 October 2022, with the unmistakable silhouette of Filfla sitting beneath the fiery orange sky.
A Halloween scene created entirely by nature
The combination of the setting sun, heavy cloud cover and the dark outline of the small island produced a scene that could easily have been designed for Halloween.
Caruana shared the photograph again for Halloween, giving the dramatic moment another chance to catch the attention of people across Malta.
Filfla, viewed from Malta’s southern coastline, provided the perfect foreground as the orange light broke through the clouds behind it.
It is one of those photographs where timing makes all the difference, turning an ordinary sunset into something that looks almost deliberately spooky.
