Enemalta will begin works tomorrow to strengthen the electricity distribution network between Gżira and Sliema, involving the installation of 7.2 kilometres of new cables.
The project includes a new 4.5-kilometre, 11 kV cable connection between Manoel Island and the Sliema Ferries. It is intended to meet growing electricity demand in the two localities and provide a stronger connection to the network from the Manoel Island Distribution Centre.
A further 2.7 kilometres of low-voltage cables will be installed to reinforce the area’s secondary electricity distribution network.
The existing high-voltage cable, which has been in service for many years and has required several repairs, will also be replaced to reduce the risk of faults and improve the reliability of electricity supply.
The works will be carried out along the seafront and are expected to take around two months.
As the project progresses towards Sliema, part of the seafront bus lane will be closed, while traffic heading out of Sliema will be restricted to a single lane.
