A marriage proposal at the Cincinnati Zoo became even more memorable thanks to one very special witness: Fiona the hippo.
In 2017, Nick Kelbe visited the zoo with his girlfriend, Hayley Roll, during their one-year anniversary outing. What Hayley thought was a normal visit soon turned into a life-changing moment.
According to reports from the time, Hayley handed her phone to a stranger so they could take a photo. When she turned back around, Nick was already down on one knee, ready to propose.
The moment was already emotional, but the photo quickly became famous for another reason. Fiona, the Cincinnati Zoo’s much-loved baby hippo, was pressed up against the glass behind them, appearing to watch the proposal unfold.
Fiona had already captured hearts around the world that year. She was born at the Cincinnati Zoo in January 2017, six weeks premature, and weighed only 29 pounds at birth. The zoo has said that this was far below the normal birth weight range for a hippo.
Her survival story drew huge attention, as zoo staff worked closely to care for her during her earliest and most fragile days. Fiona later became a symbol of hope for many animal lovers and one of the most famous hippos in the world.
That is what made Nick and Hayley’s engagement photo even sweeter. It was not just a proposal picture, it became a tiny piece of Fiona’s wider story too.
The image remains one of those warm internet moments people still enjoy years later: a couple celebrating love, a surprise animal guest, and a perfectly timed photo that no one could have planned.
