Malta international Jana Barbara has scored her first competitive goal for new club 1. FFC Recklinghausen, helping the German side to an emphatic 5-1 victory over Vorwärts Spoho Köln.
The 25-year-old midfielder started the Frauen-Regionalliga West match at Stadion Hohenhorst on Sunday, 30 August, and needed just 18 minutes to find the net.
Merle Kümmel opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Barbara doubled Recklinghausen’s advantage seven minutes later.
First goal in only her second appearance
Barbara’s goal arrived in only her second competitive appearance for her new club.
Sari Kobayashi went on to score twice, while Jennifer Moses added Recklinghausen’s fifth goal in the 82nd minute. Madlen Behrends scored a late consolation for the visitors.
The Malta FA also reported that Barbara registered an assist during the match.
Barbara had made her Recklinghausen debut on the opening weekend of the season, starting and playing 75 minutes in a 6-2 victory over Rhenania Bottrop.
A new chapter in Germany
Barbara joined Recklinghausen this summer following a spell with VfR Warbeyen. She has also represented FC Schalke 04 and spent several years within the SGS Essen setup.
The midfielder became part of Malta’s senior national team in 2025 after obtaining Maltese citizenship through her family roots.
Perfect start for Recklinghausen
The 5-1 victory maintained Recklinghausen’s perfect start to the Frauen-Regionalliga West season.
After two matches, the club has six points and has scored 11 goals, an encouraging opening to a particularly important campaign.
The 2026/27 season will help determine qualification for Germany’s new national 3. Liga Frauen, which is due to begin in 2027/28. Eight places in the new competition have been allocated to clubs from the Regionalliga West.
For Barbara, a first goal in just her second competitive appearance provides a promising start to the Malta international’s latest chapter in German football.
