A tiny visitor has made an unusual escape from Corradino after a hedgehog became trapped inside the prison grounds and needed help from wildlife rescuers.
The hedgehog had somehow found his way onto the grounds of the Correctional Services Agency before becoming stuck in a narrow space behind a gate, where he could not free himself.
Correctional officer Charlene DeBattista spotted the animal and contacted Nature Trust Malta’s Wildlife Rescue Team for assistance.
Meet Ninu
After being freed, the hedgehog was given the name Ninu, a nod to Ninu Xkora, a figure associated with one of Corradino Prison’s best-known ghost stories in Maltese folklore.
Nature Trust Malta said the rescued hedgehog was quite dehydrated and will spend a few days in rehabilitation to make sure he is fit and healthy before being released back into the wild.
For Ninu, getting into prison may have proved easier than getting back out. Thankfully, this particular prison break had a happy ending.
