Bro. Edward Galea FSC, a much-loved figure within the De La Salle community who dedicated more than 70 years of his life to education and service, has died aged 102.
Born in Żabbar on 16 August 1924, Bro. Edward spent decades teaching, leading and mentoring generations of students at De La Salle College.
More than seven decades devoted to education
Bro. Edward’s remarkable journey in education stretched back to the Second World War. Born Anthony Galea, he left Malta for France in 1939 as a young aspirant. During the war, he and other Maltese Brothers faced danger because of their British passports and were forced to flee St Maurice L’Exil to avoid discovery by the Nazis.
He returned to Malta in 1945 and went on to serve De La Salle College in numerous roles, including teacher, director, head of the Junior School and mentor. Even later in life, he remained involved in the College community, teaching religion, attending school meetings and organising prayer meetings.
His connection with generations of students was particularly special. Over the course of his long career, he taught members of successive generations within the same families, including grandfathers, fathers and sons.
A lifetime of service recognised by Malta
In 2022, Bro. Edward was awarded the Medal for Service to the Republic in recognition of his contribution. Official records list Brother Edward Galea FSC among that year’s recipients of the honour.
De La Salle College announced his death on 4 September, paying tribute to the lasting impact he had on students, educators and families through his commitment to education, faith and the Lasallian mission.
For generations who passed through De La Salle, Bro. Edward was far more than a familiar face at the College. His extraordinary lifetime of service made him part of the story of the school itself.
