It’s World Animal Day: A Reminder to Show Malta’s Animals Some Extra Care

·

3 min read

It’s World Animal Day, a day dedicated to animals and the importance of protecting their welfare around the world.

Marked every year on 4 October, World Animal Day encourages people, communities and animal welfare organisations to raise awareness of the issues affecting animals and to take practical action to help them.

Here in Malta, it is also a timely reminder of the animals waiting in shelters, the volunteers who give their time to care for them and the organisations working throughout the year to rescue and support animals in need.

Small actions can make a difference

Helping animals does not always have to mean making a major commitment. Supporting a local animal welfare organisation, volunteering at a shelter, donating supplies or considering responsible adoption are all ways people can get involved.

Even the way we interact with animal content online matters. World Animal Day encourages people to use social media to raise awareness while being careful not to support content that exploits animals, including staged rescues or unethical animal interactions.

Why 4 October?

The story of World Animal Day dates back more than a century. The first celebration was organised by Heinrich Zimmermann in Berlin in 1925. The event later moved to 4 October, the feast day of Francis of Assisi, and a proposal to make World Animal Day universal was accepted at a congress in Florence in 1931.

Today, the occasion is marked in different ways around the world, but the message remains simple: animals depend on people to treat them with care, respect and compassion.

And for anyone in Malta wondering how to mark World Animal Day, today could be a good opportunity to support the people and organisations already doing that work every day.
