Wied iż-Żurrieq’s beloved parker Ċikku l Markiż dies after decades of service

Francis Caruana, known for his captain’s hat and warm smile, spent 56 years helping visitors park their cars and sharing stories about Malta.

Francis Caruana, the much-loved Wied iż-Żurrieq parking attendant known as Ċikku l-Markiż and il-Kaptan, has died following a long illness.

A familiar face at the popular coastal destination of Wied iż-Żurrieq, Caruana was known for his trademark captain’s hat, welcoming smile and friendly manner, which made him a memorable figure for generations of locals and visitors.

He spent 56 years helping motorists find parking spaces and guiding them as they parked their cars. He began the job at the age of 13, assisting his father, and continued the family tradition after his father’s death.

Since news of his death emerged, hundreds of people have paid tribute to Caruana, remembering his decades of service and the warmth he brought to Wied iż-Żurrieq.
