Seventy-five new trees are set to be planted in Siġġiewi as part of road widening works being carried out along Triq Bur il-Kbir.
Infrastructure Malta said the project will require the removal of 15 young cypress trees, with five new trees being planted for every tree removed.
The replacement planting will consist of 21 cypress trees and 54 olive trees, bringing the total number of new trees to 75.
Road widening and new planting
The 21 new cypress trees will be planted in the same field, while the 54 olive trees will be planted in nearby areas.
The planting forms part of measures accompanying the widening of the road. Infrastructure Malta said the road project is also intended to improve safety and ease traffic congestion in the area.
The agency will provide and plant the new trees, while their future upkeep will be handled by the owners of the fields where they are planted.
The works also include the reconstruction of rubble walls along the road.
The plans mean that while 15 young cypress trees will be removed during the works, the project will introduce a total of 75 new trees across the area.
